Introduce Yourself!
Posted by BreakThru on July 4, 2020 at 1:51 pmWelcome to the BreakThru Mentoring!
Thanks for participating, we really hope you find this program helpful towards getting into med school. One of the first things to do is introduce yourself. The more connections you have, the stronger your network is, and the easier it becomes to leverage those connections to help get into medical school and all of that starts right here with introducing yourself!
So once again, welcome!

Hey— my name is Maryum. I’m a rising sophomore at Rutgers University and I’m majoring in Psychology, and minoring in Political Science and Biological Sciences. Although I want to pursue pediatric surgery or psychiatry (or perhaps a combination of pediatrics and psychiatry), I, too, have an interest in health disparities and am keen on public health. Furthermore, I want to be able to form a bridge between politics and medicine, and see public health as one of the many ways in doing so. Oh, also, it’s awesome to see other people here interested in working with kids like I am 🙂

Hi All,
I am Janaya Jones and am currently doing an informal post baccalaureate. I graduated with a Biological Sciences degree with a minor in Chemistry from CSUEB. I am very motivated to get back on track to pursue my career in medicine. I currently work as a medical scribe in the emergency department which I absolutely love and have learned so much from this position. I hope to connect with my mentor and form a network with other future physicians.
Good luck to everyone!

Hi everyone!
I’m Fareeda Eraky and I am a sophomore at Rutgers-New Brunswick majoring in Cell Biology and Neuroscience. I am currently considering adding a psychology minor because I’ve developed a strong interest in mental health and psychiatry. In my free time, I enjoy playing different sports and instruments! I’m looking forward to meeting everyone and am happy to be part of this great support system.

Hey Fareeda! Psychology is huge and especially important as I think we’re all seeing this year. Definitely take a look at Medical Schools that have Music in Medicine Programs. I think they’d especially prize your musical abilities – might give you a leg up. I know RowanSOM has such a program, and we have several musicians here.

I am also on the pre-med track, as of now I’m not certain on what specialty I would want to venture on to, but I do love children so pediatrics is definitely an option I keep in mind. I am super excited to get to know and work with my mentor as well as getting to know you all!

Yusra! Sorry I’m catching up on replying to people’s intro posts!
Pediatrics is an awesome field. I think if I wasn’t so certain about psych, I might be applying peds this cycle. I gotta say, as a pediatric resident your immune system must get so strong lol. Even if you don’t go straight peds, there are so many fellowships! Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric PM&R, Child and Adolescent Psych, just to name a few. And of course delivering babies during OBGYN is an incredible experience too. Ahh, so many options!
Anyway, let us know if we help at all or if you want to pick our brains about specialties or MCAT prep as you move frmo sophomore to junior years 🙂

I love all the Cell bio / neuro science / psychology majors! I’m sending you a message to get you in touch with another medical student who I think you’d really like connecting with. He’s right on track for psychiatry too. Also fee free to reach out to Nathan Carroll, one of our CEOs. He’s applying psych right now and will be starting residency in July!
