    The Med School Application

For those reading about this in high school or just before college begins... this may seem like it's too far down the line.

In reality, it'll hit you faster than you think. So we wanted to make sure you have a grasp of what exactly the medical school application process is so that you can be mentally prepared throughout your 4 years of college and however much of high school you have left. By knowing what the end goal is, you'll have a better understanding of how you should be allocating your time.

Start Thinking About Your Application on Day 1!

    The Steps to Your Application

First, we'll have to discuss the different medical schools available to you: U.S MD, U.S. DO, Caribbean MD, and International MD. For more information on these, refer to our discussion about the various degrees in medicine.

Long story short, if you want to be a physician, you will be obtaining an MD or a DO in the United States. Both degrees are functionally equivalent. (Functionally equivalent means that they are both fully licensed physicians, have equal practice rights, take the same exams, and can go into the same residencies.)

Next, after you've decided what type of degree you want, you'll have to do your research on how many and which schools you want to apply to. This is based on your academic stats (GPA, sGPA, Experiences, Research, etc), location preference, what you're looking for in a medical school, and whatever else is guiding your decision. When the time comes, there are several potential resources you can use.

Materials For The Medical School Application

Then comes the actual application, the final step in this premed journey. We'll try to simplify this touching upon the high-yields.

    1. Applications open in the month of May for both MDs (AMCAS) and DOs (AACOMAS). However, planning begins much further in advance.

    2. To be able to apply, you'd need the following documents ready to go. This process goes by rolling decision, so the earlier you are, the higher your chance of acceptance.
      1. MCAT (Medical College Admission Test)
      2. Official Transcript
      3. Letters of Recommendation (at least 5 ready to go)
      4. Committee Letter (written by your college's equivalent to the health professions office)
      5. Personal Statement (yeah... and this isn't the last one you'll have to write either!)

    The Application

Assuming you have all everything you need, now comes the application process itself. In short, it looks like this:

    Primary Applications --> Secondary Applications --> Interviews --> Waiting --> Waiting --> Acceptance/Waitlist/Rejection

Let's break that down real quickly.

Primary Applications: Similar to the Common App. Contains your personal statement, grades, extracurriculars, biographical information, etc. This gets submitted first, has to get verified by a committee, and then you're in the clear for...

Secondary Applications: This is essentially supplemental applications. Each medical school you apply to likely has their own set of questions they want you to answer. This could be short answers, or 500 word responses. It can vary. These are time consuming because it has to be individualized to each medical school you apply to.

Interviews: Your time to shine! You'll spend a day at the medical school who invited you, get to see the campus, meet the faculty, and do generally do a traditional interview. You'll be asked questions like "Why medicine?" or "Why do you want to come here?". Things like that, so having a strong resolve and reason to pursue medicine will make your passion show clearly.

Waiting: This might be on the most nerve-wrecking moments as a premed... just waiting to hear back for your first acceptance or from your dream school.

    Congratulations!

And then it'll happen! You'll get a phone call, or an email, or a snail mail, telling you that you've made it! Congratulations! You're one step closer to becoming a doctor :)

We mention this so you have an idea what the final step looks like. Preparation begins early, by getting to know your professors for letters, getting clinical experience to solidify your reasoning for medicine, and everything else this step entails.

But don't stress! At every step of the way, we at Project BreakThru are here to help.
